The Potter House

Thursday, May 4, 2023   7pm

Mark Luzio, a woodworker from New York, was astonished when he saw the interior of the Potter House, an 18th century former tavern on Old Plainfield Pike in Scituate. It had more original, untouched woodwork than he had ever seen in a colonial-era building.

Luzio learned that the interior had been finished by a master joiner who apprenticed with the Townsend and Goddard furniture makers in Newport. He bought the building and spent ten years restoring it inside and out.

On Thursday, May 4, Luzio will be at the Peace Dale Museum of Art and Culture to talk about where he found the tools he used to replicate the existing work, how he knew what the millwork should look like, and how he managed to seamlessly meld new with old.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Museum Gallery at 7:00 p.m. It will also be live-streamed on the Museum’s YouTube channel.
